FAQ

  • Do you accept insurance?

Yes. I currently accept Sentara/Optima, Anthem, Cigna, United, and Medicaid.

I am unable to file with secondary insurance.

  • What forms of payment do you accept?

All forms of credit (Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover) are accepted as payment. This will include the option to pay with your HSA or FSA card. Your payment information will be stored in a HIPPA compliant, secure, online portal and will typically be charged within 24-48 hours of your session. Anyone utilizing commercial insurance must provide a card to remain on file.

Cash may be accepted on a case by case basis and must be provided at the start of each session.

  • Do you offer telehealth?

Yes. Clients with access to reliable transportation or the ability to be seen in the office have the option to attend in person. If you are unable to attend in person, telehealth is an option. Clients must have reliable access to internet with working audio/video. Clients must also currently be located in Virginia at the time of the appointment. All telehealth must be done in a private location with minimal distractions.

  • If your office location accessible?

This depends on your personal circumstance. The parking lot offers some accessible spaces (when available) and there is a small elevator. Telehealth is an option for those with mobility challenges or those unable to easily access the office.

  • Do you provide court-ordered therapy?

    No, not at this time.

  • Do you offer substance abuse services?

I am able to support those with history of substance use with co-occurring mental health struggles, but have no certifications in treating substance abuse.

Sessions cannot be provided to clients who are actively under the influence of substances.

  • Do you see families or couples?

Sometimes it’s helpful to invite a family member or partner into an individual clients session (with their permission and approval) to work on a specific issue. But I do not provide family/couples counseling.

  • Can someone sit-in on my session with me?

Sometimes it’s helpful to have someone with you if they are necessary to facilitate the therapeutic process/work on a specific issue. I may also sometimes request parents join a session when necessary for minor clients. But typically the process works best with just the individual. You are welcome to bring someone with you to the visit but they will be asked to remain in the waiting room. For telehealth appointments, the client should be located somewhere private with no distractions. If someone is revealed to sitting in on the session without prior knowledge/notice or there are too many distractions, I may end the session early (fees will still apply).

  • How much will it cost?

That depends on your personal situation. If you have insurance, your carrier will determine the amount of your copay, coinsurance, or deductible. It is up to the client to make sure they are aware and up to date on their policy. For cash rates, an initial intake session is $175 and regular sessions $155. Please contact me for a sliding-scale option. Proof of income may be required to qualify for sliding-scale rates. Detailed financial documents will be provided to all new clients.

See below notice for information regarding GFE.

  • How do I get started?

The best way to get started is to reach out to me via email here. We can then set up a short consultation if needed. It’s important to find a good match between therapist and client - if we’re a good fit, you will be provided intake paperwork to complete. If it’s not a good fit, I am happy to provide referrals. Once the paperwork is completed and signed, I will reach out to set up your first appointment and get you on the schedule!

  • Do I have to complete the intake questionnaire?

Yes. This not only is the best way to get started, but it helps save time during your intake session so we can get to the important stuff. Please complete as much of the intake form as you can, in as much detail as you can. You will not be scheduled until the paperwork has been completed in full. If you have difficulty completing the paperwork or need help, please let me know.

  • How many sessions will I have?

When it comes to payment, insurance typically allows for an ‘unlimited’ number of sessions, but it will depend on your policy. For cash pay clients, there is no limit to the number of sessions you can have.

When it comes to your personal mental health journey, everyone’s experience is different. For some they may only need a few sessions, for others the journey can be longer. My goal is to support you through your journey and provide continuity as long as the therapeutic process is effective in meeting your needs. Sessions are typically on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis.

  • Do you provide crisis intervention?

Not at this time. While clients may sometimes experience mental health challenges and hardships, there are some limitations to what outpatient therapy can provide. As a solo practitioner, I cannot always respond immediately or have the necessary tools to support those in active crisis. I do provide and encourage current clients to utilize appropriate resources if experiencing a crisis.

In some circumstances, an additional session/sessions can be provided for clients experiencing distress when client/therapist availability allows.

  • As a client, how do I get a hold of my therapist?

Once you become a client, you will make a profile on a secure EHR (electronic health record) platform, which offers a messenger feature. I am also accessible via email, phone/text. Please keep in mind that while these platforms are HIPAA compliant and secure, it is always best to avoid communicating sensitive information - which is safer relayed via phone, telehealth, or in-person.

Good Faith Estimate Notice:

Under the law, health care providers are required to give clients who do not have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency services. This includes related costs like therapy session fees and other applicable charges.

You can ask your provider for a Good Faith Estimate in writing before your first session or at any time. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you may dispute the bill.
